The Benefits-Based Accountability Handbook

The bravEd Benefits-Based Accountability Handbook

The go-to resource for building real accountability in schools and districts

Over the past 17 years, bravEd has been deeply immersed in the research and development needed to rethink educational accountability from the ground up. That work has culminated in something we’re incredibly proud to share:

The Benefits-Based Accountability Handbook—a comprehensive, virtual guide to help you account for what truly matters in your schools.

This isn’t a static PDF or a one-and-done playbook. The handbook lives online by design, so it can evolve as the work evolves. As more schools and districts engage, we continue refining and expanding the content—ensuring you always have the most current thinking, strategies, and examples at your fingertips.

Why the Handbook Matters

  • Cohort-quality learning, on your terms
Cohorts have long been our preferred way to support leaders in this work. What began as in-person gatherings adapted during COVID into an effective online model. Now, the handbook brings that same high-impact experience to you—without overburdening your schedule or resources.

  • A Common Shared Vocabulary—finally at scale
One of the most powerful outcomes of Benefits-Based Accountability is a shared vocabulary that resonates with educators, parents, and stakeholders alike. This only works when it's truly common and shared. The handbook helps make that possible—whether or not a bravEd team member is present.

  • Equity for small and rural districts
Most school systems in the U.S. are small and rural—often left out of large-scale improvement efforts. The handbook changes that. It gives every leader the tools to engage in the work, at their own pace, regardless of size or location.

  • Real-world stories and examples
One of the biggest challenges in pioneering new work is knowing where to begin. The handbook includes lived examples and shared insights from leaders across the country—offering guidance, clarity, and encouragement for those just starting out.

How to Access the Handbook

The handbook is available exclusively through one of the following memberships:

  • Base, Pro, or Teams Memberships – For schools and districts currently engaging in the work.

  • Community of Practice Membership – For those who’ve completed at least two years of implementation and want continued access and support.

Choose the membership that fits your context:

  • Base Membership is ideal for individuals or small, rural districts moving at their own pace.

  • Pro and Teams Memberships offer robust support for campuses and districts ready to go deeper and move faster.

Welcome to the work. We’re glad you’re here.
Let’s build something great together.
